Keyboard Wedge
Keyboard Wedge is the most versatile way to interface your scanner. It
works with any operating system (past or future) including
all releases of MS Windows,
Unix, Linux, DOS... etc. It requires no software drivers because it emulates
the keyboard. When you scan a barcode your computer 'thinks' the data
is being typed from the keyboard. Keyboard Wedge requires a regular PC
with a PS2 keyboard connector.
- Switch off power to the computer.
- Remove the keyboard from the back of the computer
- Inspect the keyboard connector and the connectors on the scanner.
The scanner is supplied with two types of connector. If the keyboard
connector is bigger than the scanner connector it is likely you have
an older style keyboard with 5 pin DIN connectors. Refit the short
scanner extension lead so the scanner and keyboard connectors match.
- Insert the plug on the scanner lead into the computer
socket (where the keyboard was connected).
- Connect the keyboard to the free socket on the scanner lead.
- Switch the computer on and test the keyboard and scanner. A simple way
is to run a text editing program like Notepad. Make sure keystrokes appear
on the screen. Scan a barcode. The data from the barcode should appear
on the screen just as if they were typed from the keyboard.
USB
USB installation is given for a PC running MS Windows 98SE or later.
Other platforms and operating systems may differ and you should refer to your
computer documentation regarding the installation of USB devices. Note that
Windows 95 and early versions of Windows 98 did not include USB support
even though some of these computers had the USB hardware fitted.
The USB interface is specially designed to allow 'hot swapping'.
This means USB devices may be connected and disconnected while the computer
is switched on and running.
- Switch your computer on and make sure all applications programs have been closed down.
- Connect the scanner to the USB connector (usually) on the back of the computer.
Do not attempt to scan any barcodes until after the installation process is complete.
- After a second or two your PC will prompt for the driver disk. The USB drivers
are part of the Windows operating system and are located on your original Windows
installation disk. Follow the on screen instructions.
- Installation of the USB driver need only be done once. However you will have to
install the driver on each USB socket if your computer has more than one.
The next time you fit the scanner a connection will be established automatically.
- Test the installation. Start a text editing program like Notepad. First make
sure your keyboard is working correctly. Now scan a barcode. The barcode data
should appear on the screen just as if they were typed from the keyboard.
RS232
Detailed RS232 installation and configuration will be dependent on the
applications program and/or the particular hardware platform the scanner
is to be used with. Engineers and knowledgeable users who require specific
technical information and advice on RS232 matters should contact
our support desk direct. Appropriate software drivers will need to be
obtained from a third party or
else specially written.
Scanning normal barcodes
Barcode scanning is easy and intuitive. Simply point the
scanner at the barcode and press the trigger. Move the aiming beam
across the barcode. A beep will sound and the beam is switched off automatically.
If the scanner does not react immediately move it closer or further
from barcode. The exact distance between the scanner and barcode will vary
and is not critical. Typically it will be about 25-50mm (1-2 inches).
Make sure the aiming beam covers the entire
width of the barcode and is roughly parallel to it.
Scanning 2D barcodes
The scanning technique for two dimentional barcode like PDF417 is
slightly different.
Start with the aiming beam just outside and above the barcode symbol.
Slowly move the beam downward so it sweeps over the entire barcode symbol.
As you do so a 'scratching' sound will be heard. When the whole barcode
has been traversed a beep will sound and the beam is switched off automatically.
You may need a couple of attempts until the correct action
is learned. The following comments may help.
- The scanner should be held about 25-50mm (1-2 inches) from the barcode
such that the
aiming beam is just a little wider than the barcode symbol.
- The beam is moved across the whole barcode at a speed such that
the whole barcode is swept in about 1-2 seconds.
- You may find it easier to start at the bottom and sweep the barcode
with an upward motion. The sweeping direction doesn't matter. Use whichever
is easier for you.
- If the barcode does not read after the first sweep keep the trigger pressed
and sweep back again in the opposite direction. The scanner remembers earlier
sweeps and will 'fill in' on subsequent sweeps.
Maintenance
The scanner requires no regular maintence other than the occasional
cleaning of the scanning window with a soft damp tissue to remove
accumulated dust.
IMPORTANT: Never use a solvent on any part of the scanner.
